Research & development

The research and development work at ITT Flygt faces major challenges. Around 20 percent of the world's electrical energy is used for pumping. The products developed today will contribute to solving tomorrow's environmental problems, provided they have low energy consumption when transporting and treating water. Our new products are being developed with due consideration to global environmental work. The focal issues are the total environmental impact of the products, their consumption of raw materials, environmental impact of the manufacturing processes, reliability of the products, their useful life, and scope for recycling.

Three unique advantages
The name ITT Flygt has always been linked to a high degree of technical expertise. The company’s solid reputation embraces three unique advantages. First, we have developed state of the art know-how in the key areas of hydraulics, electric motors and sealing technology. Second, we manufacture all key components ourselves, which means we have full control over product quality. Mechanical face seals, for instance, are the heart of a submersible pump. ITT Flygt is one of the few pump manufacturers that designs and produces its own seals. Third, ITT Flygt has a sales organisation that embraces all important markets, giving us a unique source of customer feedback and experience.

R&D Increased R & D resources
We intend to remain the technological leader in our fields by meeting customer requirements in a broader perspective. Today’s customers appreciate more and more operational reliability and total economy throughout a product’s life cycle. In 1998, additional resources were channelled into Research & Development in order to meet the challenges ahead. These investments will result in a substantial increase in R&D resources for the coming years.

N-pump sets future standard
Customers buying pumps require maximum reliability and efficiency combined with favourable life-cycle costs. This becomes very clear in our daily relations and in-depth discussions with customers around the world.
The ambition to further develop pump performance has resulted in a revolutionary type of design, the N-pump. Development work on the N-Pump began as early as 1996, concentrating on a new, advanced fluid technology. Tests in laboratories and realtime applications – such as wastewater and sewage plants, operating under tough conditions in Canada, US, Germany and Sweden – have all shown very positive results.

N-pump The advantages of the N-pump from an energy, maintenance and service standpoint have been widely commended. Without exception, all customers who have tested the N-pump have readily accepted and applauded this innovative technology.
The N-pump has proved far more effective than traditional pumping techniques. The N-pump is better equipped to combat clogging, and its efficiency is very high throughout the operational period. Energy usage – an environmental factor of prime importance – is 30–50 % lower than traditional solutions.
We are convinced that the N-pump will set the standard for future wastewater pumps thanks to its unique combination of high efficiency and reliability.

The importance of customer care
No one is more important to ITT Flygt than the customer. Our ambition is to meet customer requirements in every stage, from initial discussions and sales to service and forthcoming new investments.
The demand from customers to take advantage of products and know-how of a vendor like ITT Flygt offers a number of opportunities for success.
For example, providing spare parts/accessories, service, rentals etc., has become more important than ever in order to be the preferred vendor. Our upgrade packages now include replacement kits so that older pump impellers can be replaced with the new N-impeller – an easy step for migrating to the pump technology of tomorrow.

Lightweight Ready pumps
Field tests, certification and laboratory simulation have all helped refine the technological features of the easy-to-carry Ready pumps.
The Ready pumps are being marketed as ’’Light, Strong and Lasting’’. They are intended primarily for the construction sector as well as other customers requiring a lightweight, slim, economical pump for temporary use. Combining a high-grade, durable composite material as well as stainless steel, their light weight – from 9 kg upwards – and competitive price have enhanced their market appeal.

New monitoring and control units
ITT Flygt develops and manufactures its own specially designed monitoring and control equipment for pumps and mixers. A pump controller specially adapted for grinder pump stations has recently been developed.
